[Dirvish] sending mail on any failure

Hi, I'm new to this backup game. I'm wondering if there is a straightforward
way I can make dirvish (or it's pre/post exec scripts) send an email if any
stage of the backup process fails?

I'd originally created a post-server script to test $DIRVISH_STATUS != 0.
But obviously this never gets executed if the pre-server script fails. I see
there is a script the dirvish wiki but was hoping for something that was
calls for each backup.

The only thing I can think of is some fairly elaborate bash scripting. Am I
missing anything simple?
