I don't know much about USB drives but we did have the reverse problem
with a Seagate FreeAgent, which would spin down by itself even when in
use. Luckily we found some posts that explained how to tell the drive
not to spin down, and the method worked. So perhaps the same technique
will enable you to spin down your drives?
