I guess the reason I didn't comment on the previous patch is that it 
seems worthy but I don't actually need it right now! With a backup 
system like dirvish, my overriding concern is that it keeps working 
reliably. As a result, I'm extra conservative about changes.

So I just read the previous patch and checked I couldn't see any obvious 
way it would break the way I use dirvish, if it did get adopted.

One obvious thing I'd be keen to see is a set of tests for the patch.
