It does seem a bit like that one, doesn't it?  There's another couple of
bugs referenced from there which might also be related.  The trick in
downgrading, of course, is finding (or making) packages that are new enough
to support --link-dest but older than these bugs (remember I'm running
Debian here -- we're not exactly known for our constantly up-to-date
packages <grin>); upgrading will possibly bite me in the arse elsewhere.

Incidentally, there were no timeout failures last night, and all I changed
was to add top monitoring.  This is freaky...
